I know I've written about space several times, how we use it in communities in the States and in Europe, how different the two feel.

It occurred to me today that one reason might be that America is HUGE. I think I've forgotten what it's like to live in a big place, with plenty of space for wide roads, wide parking spots, gargantuan parking lots, suburbs and suburbs and suburbs. And the ramifications of that...how we drive everywhere, how we live outside the centers, how we create our castles and stay in them, unless something imperative pulls us out.

The best American map hangs on the wall across from me in the living room...it's mind-boggling to look up and see how much land we have.
