Space, p.s.

Harriet Beecher Stowe stayed in Paris for a while in 1853, according to David McCullough in The Greater Journey. Apparently the way of playing in public spaces in France hasn't changed much in 150 years! The lack of clatter that I mentioned this spring was the same in the Garden of the Tuileries back then.

She writes, "...while boys and girls without number are frolicking, racing, playing ball, driving hoop, etc., but contriving to do it without making a hideous racket." McCullough adds, "How French children were taught to play and enjoy themselves without disturbing everyone else was a mystery to her."

Ja.
