Learning Those New Things Every Day

My kids now know what soybean fields look like and even could tell you a couple of things about them. For instance, that when they start turning yellow, it doesn't mean they're dying...well, I suppose it means they're heading toward dying, but it's a normal thing. It happens in late summer, when they're getting close to the harvesting point.

And they have pods just like any other kind of bean.

My husband very kindly didn't laugh at us all when we thought they were yellow because of the drought. He grew up "walking" beans and de-tassling corn, so he's our resident expert.

One of our children (I won't say which, but she lives in the South!) thought the soybean fields were fields of tobacco. Now we know.
